Alexander Theodor von Middendorff is considered one of the most pioneering scientists. As a talented researcher, Alexander Theodor von Middendorff made his contribution to the development of geography, hydrology, climatology, botany, glaciology, zoology, agriculture, ethnography (partly even linguistics) and other sciences. Along with K. E. von Baer, Alexander Theodor von Middendorff was one of the greatest naturalists in 19th-century Russia. Like Baer, Middendorff represents the type of naturalists who, in addition to encyclopaedic knowledge, had deep erudition and were able to contribute to several fields.
