ΙΝ PATMOS IN THE 16th CENTURY Diakos, Son of Kritikis, Ship-owner and Businessman It is well-established that the island of Patmos was prosperous and thriving by the end of the 16th century. This article examines the case of a successful ship-owner and entrepreneur from Patmos, who can be considered as a representative of this period: with his business connected to the sea, his relations with the Ottoman authorities, his wealth and his attachment to the Greek-Orthodox faith. Although he became somehow an almost legendary figure, his will, preserved in the archive of the Monastery of Patmos, reveals his approach to thought and action. ELISABETH A. ZACHARIADOU
