The velocity–velocity‐increment correlation is shown to be an incorrect method for determining the interaction between the energy‐containing and inertial‐range scales of a turbulent flow. As a consequence, the correlation cannot be used as a means for testing the local isotropy hypothesis. Copyright © 2006 Royal Meteorological Society
