The polar regions are among the most interesting\udregarding the ongoing debate on global\udclimate change because, due to several key climatic\udfeedbacks, they are potentially extremely\udclimatically sensitive. The best known is the\udice± albedo feedback by which an initial perturbation\ud(slight warming) melts some ice; this\udnew, more extensive, darker, melt-water area\udabsorbs more incoming sunlight, which accelerates\udthe warming and melting of surrounding\udice. Therefore, it is crucial to improve our\udunderstanding of current conditions and past\udhistory of the major ice sheets and sea-ice, and\udto model how they are likely to behave in\udfuture (e.g. in response to man-made global\udwarming). This requires not only glaciological\udobservations but also meteorological ones.\udUnfortunately, polar areas are noted for their\uddearth of observations
