 Due to its high functional expression, I NCX may serve as an important mechanism to ensure intracellular Ca 2+ homeostasis, especially during the early embryonic stage. At the fetal stage I NCX density is significantly decreased but underlies regulatory processes, that is, regulation by Na + .
