This volume contains the papers and abstracts presented at the First Annual Phoenix Conference on Longevity Health Sciences held at the Westin Kirland Resort and Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona on December 11–14, 2003. This meeting represented the first major conference designed to accelerate the rate of basic discovery and practical applications in the new field of Longevity Health Sciences and Medicine. The conference was organized and supported by three members of the Kronos Group: S. Mitchell Harman of the Kronos Longevity Research Institute (KLRI), Richard G. Cutler of the Kronos Science Laboratoty and Oxidative Stress and Aging Association (O2SA), and Mike Gibbons of the International Society for Healthy Aging Research and Education (ISHARE). At this first-of-its-kind conference, the Phoenix Conference proudly introduced and honored the extraordinary faculty that was assembled. These remarkable groups of individuals were drawn from a spectrum of different fields of specialization whose research has already shaped and will continue to shape how we live and work in the future. It was our aim that this conference and those yet to be held will lead the way in informing both lay and professional communities regarding this age of innovation in gerontology and optimal health achievement. Even in economically tight times, the demand for effective treatments and innovation in the field of Longevity Sciences continues to rise, and perhaps never has been so important. Globally and domestically, in our communities and in all parts of our society, the creative passion for discovery aimed at improving health and the quality of life is as robust as ever. The purpose of this conference and of this volume is to achieve that goal. It is clear from the reports herein that the goal was indeed met The research and clinical issues presented at this conference focused on three areas of Longevity Health Sciences, with one day provided to each area. The first area examined the role oxidative stress–related damage may have in causing age-related illness as well as the present and possible dietary, pharmaceutical, and exercise-related therapies that might reduce its adverse
