A bstract : This article sets the stage for the papers in Part V by describing the research work of the Tobacco Etiology Research Network (TERN), an ititiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Two studies coming from this matrix include one on the acquisition of tobacco use and another on the trajectories of tobacco use among college freshman.
