AbstractEighty-five of the 138 dog breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club through September 1995 have names with geographic elements. An analysis of the geographic extent of these names emphasizes the importance of Western Europe, especially Great Britain, in American dog breeding. An exploration of the scale of the names reveals a preference for national designations.
