AbstractOf the nearly 1,500 minerals which have names commonly used among English-speaking geologists, approximately one fifth bear names derived from placenames, usually those places at which or near where the mineral was first found or is found in significant amounts. A complete list of the names of these minerals shows that places in Europe have contributed nearly half of these names and the Americas another fourth.
