The purpose ofthis article is to discuss directionsforfuture research in the consumer, merchandising, and retailingfield. The author believes thatfuture research programs should be driven in large part by technological, social, and economicfactors, and therefore briefly discusses Lester Thurow's thesis that five economicforces will shape tomorrow's world. In developing research questions, researchers are urged to frame issues in the context of a theoretical framework. Research ofthis sort will not only contribute to a pragmatic understanding of markets and consumers but also provide a theoretical basisfor assessing market dynamics.
