In this article, we respond to the call put forward by McKinney, Abrams, Terry, and Lerner (1994 [this issuel)for child development researchers to address concerns related to child poverty and diversity. We acknowledge the importance of these goals and also consider the ways in which researchers select topics for study and how we evaluate the importance of social problems. Although we agree there is a needfor increased attention to the integration of child development research and outreach, we issue a call of our own for child development researchers in home economics to be increasingly involved in both basic and applied research.
