Increasing interest in productive activity outside of the market economy has lead to renewed interest in household production. In both theory and practice there are unanswered “boundary questions” about the difference between production and consumption in the home. An input‐output system model is presented in this paper as a framework in which to address these complex boundary issues. The model provides a theoretical way to distinguish between household produc tion, consumption, and other types of activity that fall outside of the market economy. The model provides a basis to better understand nonmarket economic activity that is critical to the discipline of home economics.
