A mathematical analysis of the graphic somatometry method of pattern alteration is presented. In graphic somatometry the angle of a dart or a seam is determined from angles measured on silhouette photographs of the body. In this paper, an exact geometric relationship between the angle measured on the photograph and the angle of the dart or seam on the pattern is derived for areas of garments that can be modeled with cones.
