The purpose of this study was to evaluate a smolder‐resistant finish for cotton upholstery fabrics. The treatment was found to be effective in controlling the smolder propensity of fabrics weighing up to 610 g/m 2 . The treated fabrics passed the ASTM‐proposed fabric classification test which identifies fabrics which are safe to use over polyurethane foam upholstered constructions. The treatment, consisting of borax, phosphoric acid, and a resin binder, was applied using a pad‐dry‐cure procedure. A treatment formulation providing a boric oxide level of 3.5 percent was found to provide optimum smolder protection. Performance properties of treated fabrics were examined: abrasion resistance was greatly in creased while tear and breaking strength were somewhat decreased.
