Systems concepts in the family area have generally been applied almost exclu sively to dysfunctional families, whereas it is normal functioning and develop ment of the individual that have been described from a systems perspective. Nonetheless, the value of a systems approach lies in its applicability to all forms of development and behavior. The purpose of this article is to advance under standing of the individual and family from a systems perspective and to facilitate interdisciplinary communication among individual and family theorists. This ar ticle, therefore, outlines the systems concepts in human development and family theories to show that, although the areas often remain isolated, the groundwork for unification is already present.
