Evolution of Ganado‐style Navaho rugs was studied. Correspondence from “the greatest of all Indian traders,” J. L. Hubbell, was reviewed. Paintings of rugs (rug studies) were photographed, rugs were inspected, and documents duplicated to allow handling and ordering by subject and within subject chronologically. The analysis of data was handled in a descriptive manner. Findings related to rug studies were in the area of color combination, motifs, borders, and formats. Findings related to examination of docu ments were in the areas of colors, designs, fibers, construction, use of the rugs, and the rug business. J. L. Hubbell, the trader at the post, worked as the connecting link between weavers and buyers in areas of color combinations, borders, and format, and in the rug business.
