Sociodemographic factors were identified that affect the rate of participation of home economists in volunteer service. Data for this paper are based upon responses to the 1979 American Home Economics Association Membership Survey. Two random samples of ap proximately 1,300 each were drawn. Chi‐square and loglinear hierarchical models were used in the analysis of both samples. The chi‐square analysis indicated that married women with children and retired respondents were the most likely to be active in volunteer service. The loglinear analysis identified three independent variables (income, marital status, and age) as providing the most concise description of the observed frequency table. The later analysis further identified retired respondents, married people, and middle‐income individuals as ac tive volunteers. The generalizability of the results was supported by the similarity of findings from the analysis of both samples.
