The reliability and validity of a Preschool Teacher Competency Rating Scale (PTCRS) were tested using 30 female college students, with 15 students each at two different levels of a pre school teacher training program. An interrater reliability coefficient of .90 was obtained for the entire scale, and a range of coefficients from .41 to 96 was obtained for its nine subscales. Repeated‐measures ANOV As applied to the data indicated that advanced level students were rated as significantly more competent as teachers than beginning level students, and both beginning and advanced level students were rated as significantly more competent as teachers at the end of their respective teacher training practicums on the entire PTCRS and its nine subscales. Moreover, additional exploratory analyses revealed that the PTCRS subscales ap peared to reflect accurately the impact of the preschool teacher training levels in the compe tency ratings of students at the end of their training practicums. On the basis of these findings, it was concluded that the PTCRS is a relatively reliable scale with some evidence of construct validity which can be used as an aid in training competent teachers of preschool children.
