A 1‐pound load was lifted and lowered to various shelf heights. Work cost, as measured by the extra heart beats due to the task, was determined. The results were compared to a similar study in which a 5‐pound weight was moved and kcal/minute was used as a criterion. Since the conclusions of the two studies are similar and data for the extra heart beat criterion are obtained more easily than kcal/minute, the method studied herein is recommended for the measurement of light as well as heavy work.
