Japan's economic performance in the post‐war period has attracted world‐wide attention and admiration. This article examines the fundamental features of human resource management in Japan. Special emphasis is placed on the difference between corporate structure in Japan and the West. The Japanese firm is seen as ‘quasi employee managed’ —with major implications for the quality of labour relations and employee commitment.
