As we are all aware, our society is undergoing substantial economic and social changes. Arising out of these changes are social problems such as lack of job opportunities and a high level of unemployment. Contributing to these problems has been the recent world recession. But even after an economic recovery we will only have partly solved our problems. There are forces of a more structural and long‐term nature which need to be considered if we are to understand the economic and social changes affecting society. These forces are difficult to identify but they relate to new technology and technological change.
