Whilst many safety professionals have long used system methods in the application of safety sciences in the workplace very few have employed systems in the management of the function. This paper outlines a three stage system for controlling and prioritizing projects. The advantage of a system as outlined in this discussion is that it provides a quick method of selection for projects that are essential and at the same time rejects lesser projects in an objective manner which enables the safety manager to explain his reasons for “shelving” a certain project and continuing with another.
