The recent upsurge in ‘interest’ (for ‘interest’ read ‘the possibility of making money’) in the area of stress management, has raised the cynicism‐level in ‘Blofly’ to great heights. He feels that three basic facts are usually overlooked in discussions of stress:• People differ enormously in their ability to withstand stress. The vast majority of workers cope with stress very well, so that stress management should be aimed at the small number who have problems — NOT at everyone. • It is impossible to separate life‐stress from work‐stress; that is when people cannot cope with stress, it is not possible to say whether this is due to problems in their private lives or in their work environment. • Generally speaking, blue‐collar workers suffer from stress‐induced diseases at twice the rate of executives. If HRD practitioners want to be seen to be compassionate, their first concern should be for those who have most need for their expertise.
