Although the social and family adjustments to Shift Work have had sporadic airing outside Australia, there is a recognisable need to draw together a conceptual scenario consistent with conditions in Australia. Whilst original research in Australia is sparse in this area, and what there is tends to be anecdotal, it does nevertheless support external researches. This paper outlines the main features of the interaction between shift work and the social and family adjustments, and exemplifies this interaction by studies conducted in the Australian context.
