Despite the increasing evidence that participation in physical activity may be associated with a wide range of physical and psychological benefits, very little is known about the process by which individuals change their lifestyles to include physical activity. The authors describe some recent research which indicated that certain individuals may be described as ‘activity‐ seekers’. For these people participation in various forms of physical activity might be fulfilling the important functions of assisting an individual to successfully negotiate a period of transition or crisis in their lives.
