In 1975, the publisher of The Managerial Grid (1964) mentioned to Jane and me that sales were approaching the million mark. This milestone caused us to take stock and to review the research and field experience that had accumulated from individual development programmes and OD projects over the years. Furthermore, since changes had taken place in society which affect managerial styles, we also wanted to review our own conclusions, as behavioural scientists, as to what had been learned over this time span. We were prompted, too, by managers who were asking, “What's new with the Grid?” “Are the data still valid?” “Isn't 9,9 really pie‐in‐the‐sky?”
