In the past 30 years, substantial progress has been made in the development of devices and catheters used for central venous vascular access. Temporary, semipermanent, and totally implantable access systems have each undergone multiple design revisions to improve their ease of insertion, durability, and potential for complication. This article provides methodology for the insertion of central venous access systems currently used for parenteral nutrition. The article also discusses the more common complications of these access devices and makes recommendations for management.
