This review provides an update on the current theories for etiology and pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It describes available therapeutic options for ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, as well as potential therapeutic agents for treatment of IBD. The use of nutrients as pharmacologic treatment is mentioned, including fish oil, short‐chain fatty acids, and elemental diets.
