Peak Intraoral Air Pressure in [p] as a Function of F0 in Chinese

The study explores the differences in peak intraoral air pressure in voiceless unaspirated bilabial stop consonant [p] in a CV syllable in which V is produced with different tones. Native speakers of four Chinese languages that have different tonal systems participated in the investigation. The results show that there is a positive correlation between the peak intraoral air pressure in [p] and the onset F o value of the tone that occurs on the following vocalic element. The results are discussed in terms of possible physiological explanations, such as the use of a higher subglottal pressure to produce a higher fundamental frequency.
