The object of this essay is the research of the 18th and 19th centuries Japanese woodblock prints by the analysis of the Moreira Salles Institute Collection. In general lines, this analysis is based on the development of the concept of visual chronicle applied to the historical and aesthetic universe of the woodblock prints in this period. In between, it employs the notion of modernity and the American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce's theory of signs.
