Social Anthropology deals at present in crude con-cepts, tribe, clan, age-set, &c, representing socialmasses and a supposed relation between these mas-ses. The science will make little progress on this lowlevel of abstraction, if it be considered abstractionat all, and it is necessary for further advance to usethe concepts to denote relations, defined in terms ofsocial situations, and relations between these rela-tions. (Evans-Pritchard, 1940, p. 266)Social anthropology became the science of descentgroups, and descent groups and their constitutioncame to be crucial issues in accounting for the corefunction of integrating society and keeping it toge-ther. (Roy Wagner, 1974, p. 97)What intrigues me is the consistent parallel, the re-peated echo, between intellectual propagation andprocreative acts, between knowledge and kinship.
