The article aims to analyze the relationship of the literary critic José Veríssimo (1857-1916) with the writer Lima Barreto (1881-1922). It takes press as a starting point. Both the critic and the writer worked at the newspaper, which inspires Lima’s debut novel. But beyond their confluence of ideas, the relationship is analyzed by the prism of the communication circuit in which they are inserted. Criticism is taken as an instance related to journalism. Primary sources contribute to the composition of snapshots of the communication circuit that allows to analyze Sevcenko’s proposal that Veríssimo was a “tutelary master” of Lima. This proposition is confirmed in some aspects, especially with regard to social criticism.
