With this year's Association of Veterinary Students' congress being held in Glasgow, at the veterinary school that James Herriot graduated from, the theme, ‘All creatures great and small’, while broad, was apt. The congress programme focused on emergency care of all species, helping students develop the skills needed to take action when faced with an unexpected situation. Jordan Sinclair, editor of the Journal of the Association of Veterinary Students , reports
