A number of awards were presented during the congress. The BEVA Equine Welfare Award, sponsored by Blue Cross, was presented to ‘Mac’ Johnston in recognition of his long-term dedication to providing advice and guidance for local people and vets in the Scottish Highlands. Keith Chandler, BEVA’s president, said that this had had an important bearing on the improvement of the welfare of horses in the region. Professor Johnston was a lecturer in equine medicine at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) and is a widely published author. He also subsequently became an authority on public health issues. Although living in the Scottish Highlands and commuting to the RVC, he provided help for local people and vets. Since retiring from the RVC, he has worked in the community mentoring younger vets and dealing with awkward cases and clients. The BEVA Richard Hartley Clinical Award was presented to Alan Nixon of Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in the USA for his evidencebased research on subchondral cysts. The BEVA Trust Peter Rossdale Equine Veterinary Journal Open Award was presented to co-authors Benjamin Jacklin of the RVC and Ian Wright of Newmarket Equine Hospital. This award is given for the paper in the EVJ that best achieves the journal’s mission to publish articles that either influence and improve clinical practice and/or add significantly to the scientific knowledge that underpins and supports equine veterinary medicine. The Voorjaarsdagen and BEVA Award was presented to Nicky van der Vekens of the University of Ghent for her paper ‘Atrial natriuretic peptides detect cardiac dilatation’, which was first presented at the Voorjaarsdagen Congress in April. The BEVA Trust/FVE Equine Transport Enforcement Award went to Graham Capper, senior enforcement officer for Wrexham Trading Standards. The award was introduced in 2010, in recognition of an individual or group doing the most to improve enforcement of the current transport regulations. Through his roles as senior enforcement officer for Wrexham Trading Standards and the national lead for Local Authority Coordinators of Regulatory Services (LACORS), Mr Capper initiated and ran targeted multiagency enforcement checks to tackle long-distance transport of Equidae in Europe and brought together the different agencies involved to develop standard operating procedures. He has also worked to improve enforcement across the UK by raising awareness through publicising the problems he and his team have encountered and by facilitating communication.
