A new European Regulation to protect the welfare of animals at the time of killing comes into force across the European Union on January 1, 2013. Much of the debate during the development of legislation to implement this Regulation in the UK has concerned the issue of slaughter without stunning. However, as Nathan Rhys Williams of the Humane Slaughter Association explains, the new rules will introduce important changes in other areas that vets need to be aware of.
