The annual conference of the Association for Veterinary Teaching and Research Work ( avtrw ) was described by the association's president, Professor David Taylor, as ‘a place where veterinary teachers and research workers can meet as friends and colleagues’. This year's conference, held in Scarborough from March 17 to 20, contained a stimulating mix of presentations on clinical and educational topics. The conference opened with four speakers, each of whom was involved in some way with the problem of tuberculosis, both animal and human, giving presentations on different aspects of this often controversial disease, the incidence of which is increasing in people and animals in the uk .
