THE effect of increasing pet travel on animal and public health was explored at a meeting organised by the Comparative Medicine Section of the Royal Society of Medicine recently. Delegates heard how possible changes to the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) could increase the risk of introducing diseases that are currently exotic to the UK, and how the incidence of some zoonotic infections has already increased since the PETS was introduced in February 2000.
