‘The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.’ (Mahatma Gandhi) It was with this thought in mind that the fourth Pan Commonwealth Veterinary Conference was held in Barbados from November 4 to 8. The main theme was ‘Animal health and welfare — constant challenges for veterinarians’, and with five concurrent programmes there was a wealth of material to suit all interests. However, two days were specifically dedicated to animal welfare, and a series of presentations led on to excellent discussions relevant to all participants from across the Commonwealth.
