The importance of training farmers, stockmen and veterinary surgeons in animal welfare was a recurring theme at the bva Animal Welfare Foundation's ( bva awf 's) annual discussion forum for divisional representatives, held in London on May 24. The morning sessions examined issues such as the impact of the decline in rural practices on farm animal welfare, and defra 's plans for on‐farm animal welfare surveillance. The afternoon sessions considered welfare concerns relating to angling and gamebird rearing, and welfare issues surrounding backyard poultry and the trade in live parrots
