Enthusiasm for veterinary education and research was much in evidence at the 60th annual conference of the Association for Veterinary Teaching and Research Work ( AVTRW ) held, as is traditional, in Scarborough in the week before Easter. The conference allows both those with established research careers and those relatively new to research to present results from their work; for many younger researchers, it provides the first opportunity to speak at a large scientific meeting. While attracting more veterinarians into research represents a challenge for the profession, it was clear that, for those already involved, there is much enjoyment and satisfaction to be gained. This year, in addition to the education and research streams, there was a third strand to the AVTRW conference – the role that practitioners can play in research and the interaction between clinical research and practice
