The novel use of intravenous pimobendan and oral torasemide in a cat with congestive heart failure secondary to end‐stage hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

A nine‐year‐old male neutered domestic short‐haired cat presented with acute onset of dyspnoea and tachypnoea. The investigations performed including thoracic radiography and echocardiography led to a diagnosis of congestive heart failure secondary to end‐stage hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. In addition to the standard treatment with intravenous diuretics, intravenous pimobendan was administered. No side effects or adverse reactions were noted after the administration of the drug. Complete resolution of the clinical signs was achieved. The patient was discharged from the hospital on oral medication with furosemide, pimobendan and clopidogrel. The furosemide was replaced two months later with torasemide due to refractory pleural effusion. This drug was well tolerated and resulted in marked clinical improvement. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report of the use of intravenous pimobendan and oral torasemide in a cat with congestive heart failure.
