The majority of cases occur in animals between four and 10 months of age, (Denny 1980) but there is no satisfactory evidence to suggest that there is a hereditary component to the aetiology. It is usually seen in well-nourished animals and this has led to the theory that dogs which are growing rapidly and allowed to engage in violent activity including jumping before maturity is achieved, may be subject to traumatic forces which their osseous and cartilaginous tissues are not yet able to withstand.
