HANDLING large animals like cattle is not without its risks, but these can usually be minimised by taking sensible precautions. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) provides general advice on such procedures, but farm conditions are sometimes far from ideal, and it can be difficult for new graduates in particular to know how to proceed. Here, Martyn Phippens makes some suggestions on how to avoid getting hurt. In a box on page 285, Alastair Mitchell discusses guidance available from the HSE.
