THREE years ago, an article in In Practice asked whether digital x‐ray was a toy or tool (Baxter 2004). For that particular author, who specialised in dental and oral surgery, the conclusion was that it was very much a tool. Now, as many veterinary practices are thinking about replacing their conventional x‐ray systems with digital systems, Esther Barrett looks in more detail at the principal advantages and disadvantages of going digital.
