THIS article, the second of two aiming to help practitioners avoid the frustration of inconclusive bacteriology results, explains how to maximise diagnostic yield from clinical samples. It also reviews the principles of interpreting culture results in a clinical context on a case‐by‐case basis. Host‐bacteria interactions are relevant to both sampling and interpretation, and are discussed in Part 1, published on pages 22 to 26 of this issue.
