EHRLICHIOSIS is a bacterial infection caused by a group of haemotropic intracellular bacteria. These organisms are transmitted by ticks and primarily cause disease in dogs and, occasionally, cats. Serious and sometimes fatal disease can occur in susceptible animals; in those with partial immunity, disease may remain subclinical unless they are immunocompromised. This article reviews the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of ehrlichial disease in dogs and cats.
