SURGICAL management of bladder disorders is frequently indicated in practice, whereas surgery of the urethra is less commonly performed. A thorough evaluation of the patient, including diagnostic investigations, and appropriate stabilisation are essential before proceeding with surgery. This article reviews the principles and preoperative management relating to surgery of the lower urinary tract and describes the techniques used in bladder surgery. A second article, to be published in the next issue, will outline the techniques used in urethral surgery and discuss the postoperative management of the lower urinary tract surgery patient.
