FRUSTRATED by the disappointing outcome of conventional surgery for the repair of cranial cruciate ligament ruptures in many dogs, Malcolm Ness was fascinated to hear of a new technique ‐ TPLO ‐ that was being used with great success in the USA. When presented with the opportunity to learn the procedure for himself from the expert, it seemed too good to miss. Here, he describes the experience, and reflects on whether, with hindsight, it was worth the time out of practice and its impact on the practice in other ways.
