THE introduction of purchased sheep, whether into an existing flock or to restock a property slaughtered out because of foot‐and‐mouth disease (FMD), is fraught with problems, the greatest of which is the introduction of disease with the purchased animals. The risks can be minimised by the adoption of sound biosecurity principles. On a practical level, there are several key areas that must be considered by the farmer working in collaboration with his or her veterinary surgeon and these are discussed in this article.
