THERE are many reasons why a veterinary surgeon in practice may decide to undertake a research project ‐ personal satisfaction or career progression being just two of them. Whatever the motivation, the project must be thought through properly before any commitment is made. In this article, Neil Forbes describes the types of research which may be carried out in practice and the background planning involved. A second article, to be published in the next issue, will discuss how a research project might be designed and conducted.
